Case Study

A multifunctional space in a listed neoclassical building

The British Medical Association (BMA) commissioned the architectural practice HOK to create a conference hall with state-of-the-art equipment and furnishings in the redeveloped BMA House, a listed neoclassical building originally designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The remodelled building respects Lutyens’ original design while providing an attractive modern space that meets the needs of both traditional BMA members and new generations of doctors. The conference room, installed at the old library of the building, had to provide a multifunctional space to hold different kind of events.

Design challenges and solutions

The British Medical Association needed a solution to transform the building old Library into a multifunctional space, maintaining the existing building and adding new facilities. Figueras leverages its engineering and design capabilities to create innovative seating systems that optimize space and enhance profitability. In this case, the firm drew on its expertise to develop a system in which chairs move along floor rails and are stored under a stage. The 6035 Mutaflex System increases profitability and optimizes the space where it is installed by extending its functionality.

Product supplied

The conference room was equipped with the Mutarail System combined with the seat Flex 6035, an innovative movable seating system by Figueras. This system allows in just minutes to move chairs along floor rails and store them under a stage. The transformation creates an open space for banquets, dances or exhibitions. It is considered a sustainable product as allows a multipurpose space.
